February 2008 (Planning)

The Wear Surma Clinic Bangladesh

Following our 2007 visit, we established close contact with Water Aid in order to plan a Sanitation Programme for the village. Fortunately, Ray Heslop, Water Aid’s consultant engineer, lives nearby and was an invaluable source of information, advice and support.

Our plan was to provide each dwelling with an improved “Improved Pit Latrine”. These are safe and hygienic (Google it!!). We have requested our Clinic staff to arrange for a contractor to commence installation while we are there. We have also placed an order for the deep tube well. This should also be started around February/March (after the monsoon).

Lots of research has been made into Solar Ovens. We purchased a number of ovens from the USA to try out in the village. These are far too expensive to purchase for general use, though.

A friend, Andrew Flint, will be in Bangladesh ahead of us, and will try out the Solar Ovens before our arrival.

The above planning took several months of hard work and research, as well as the continuous fund raising. So easy to relate in just a few words!!
